Egyptian Tets

My first introduction to Severus Alexander coins were the Imperial ones, mainly denarii.  As I branched out into the Provincial coins, I found the Egyptian Billion Tetradrachms of Severus Alexander extremely interesting.   They allow me to combine my love of both the Egyptian and Roman civilizations into one collectible.

Attribution of the coins is very similar to other provincial coins.   On the reverse you will sometimes find a Large "L" with another Greek character or characters inside (next to it).  The characters next to the Large "L" indicate the year of Alexandrian Regnal.   This is the Alexandrian chronology of the reign of emperors.  It goes by the date August 12th as the beginning of a new year.  An emperor's second year falls on this date, no matter how many months his reigned.  For number over 10, you combine the letter for ten with the letter for the ones.  You can convert the character to the Regnal with the chart below.

*An interesting study by Andrew Burnett and Paul Craddock in ANSMN 28 states the belief that Alexandrian Tets in the years 4,5 and 7 were minted in Rome for use in Alexandria.   Minting coins in a different area than they are used in is not an unknown event.   Looking at the style and appearance of the coins, the noting of the regnal years differently, busts and legends vary, the divergence in reverse types, and die axis differences. ; the authors present a very compelling argument that I have to agree with.  Look below and note the coins labeled as minted from Rome from the other coins.    They are definitely very different coins.
